WARMING TREND AHEAD FOR ANGLERS
Kentucky Lake anglers are coming off one wet stretch and headed for
another one by this weekend. Yet warmer days are on the horizon as next
week’s forecast is singing spring like conditions. Temps are expected to
eclipse the upper 60’s and perhaps even the 70-degree mark by Tuesday!
After a soggy start to the weekend anglers should see dry condition
dominate for several consecutive days. However, when warm weather slips
in this time of the year anglers know stubborn southern winds are a
factor.

Also changing has been lake levels which jumped in the aftermath of
heavy rains late last week and this week. Elevation in the New
Johnsonville area jumped to the 358.5 range earlier this week due to
heavy runoff, which is up almost four feet compared to last week at this
time.
At Kentucky Dam lake elevation is much lower as the water flows north.
Elevation is projected to be in the 354.7 range by this weekend.
However, lake levels are falling fast which means a lot of current is
present in the main river channel.
Surface temperatures have warmed since last week and are now resting in
the 46 degree range. Water color is quite dingy in the main channel as
well as the entire Big Sandy basin. Around the Paris Landing area water
color is in pretty good shape for fishing.
Crappie anglers are still finding fish on the deep sides of main lake
ledges. Depths of 18-22 feet are producing several crappie. Most anglers
are tightlining jigs or shiner minnows.
Although anglers are catching decent numbers there are still a lot of
small fish showing up that are just below the 10-inch length limit. Not
many limits of keeper size fish are being reported. That scenario has
plagued crappie fisherman since last year.
A few slabs have been taken but big fish are in the minority for most
anglers. Some boats are slow trolling Roadrunner style jigs while others
are spider rigging. The multi-pole techniques haven’t paid off as well
as single pole tightlining methods lately.
Stakebeds and brush piles in mid-range depths of 10-14 feet haven’t paid
dividends but that will change as waters warm. And rising lake levels
could see more fish move toward shallow venues.
TVA will likely pull water for the next several days so anglers can
expect falling lake levels to continue.
Bass fisherman have been back in force when weather permits. They are
finding a few fish responding to crankbaits and some jig and pig combos.
Suspending crankbaits have also paid dividends.
Next week’s warming trend will work in favor of bass fisherman once
surface temperatures rebound. Watch for significant improvement around
shallow gravel and rock points.
By this time next week anglers may well combat spring fever with some
frequent fishing trips as the mercury jumps. Meanwhile keep your fingers
crossed for some light and variable winds to accompany the forthcoming
warmup.
