LOW LAKE LEVELS COINCIDE WITH FALLING TEMPS

Lake levels on Kentucky Lake have gone from above normal one week to below normal. TVA really pulled the plug and discharged huge volumes of water in the aftermath of heavy rains that flooded the region the last two weeks.

Elevation for the weekend is forecast to be 353.9, which is about a foot below the normal low ebb winter pool elevation of 355. The low lake levels will coincide with low temperatures forecast for the weekend as a winter blast heads our way.

Temps are expected to be frigid by Sunday, a dramatic change that will keep winter anglers at bay for several days. Surface temperatures have been in the 46 degree range but will fall dramatically in the days ahead.

With the low lake levels many shallow bays and boat ramps are likely to see ice forming by early next week.

A few crappie anglers have ventured out the last week or so and stalked the main lake ledges where some deep drop-offs have given up a few fish from the 18 to 22 foot depth range. Others have attempted to find fish in midrange stakebeds and brushpiles in 10 to 14 foot depth zones but most of the fish have opted to hang out in deeper areas of the main lake.

Falling lake levels have likely pulled the crappie to deeper depths lately. That’s often the case as bait fish sometimes move with the falling lake stages, pulling the crappie with them.

Water color had cleared across the reservoir lately as falling lake levels have pulled the stained and dingy water out of bays and creeks.

Meanwhile, duck hunters across Tennessee have endured a long and unproductive season for the most part due to a mild wet winter that has seen water spread out over a four state region lately. Too much water plus a warm winter is not a good combination for duck hunters in Dixie.

The approaching winter weather may provide some improvement for waterfowlers as they enter the home stretch. Frigid temps are forecast to descend on Sunday, which should change the whole waterfowl scene to some degree.

For most it will be a bit late to salvage what has been one of the poorest seasons in years. However, a few duck hunters are hoping to end the season on a good note. Tennessee’s statewide season draws to a close on January 27.

After that youngsters will get two separate Saturday to hunt in special Youth Waterfowl Hunts. Youngsters ages 6-15 years of age will get a chance to extend their seasons on February 2 and again on February 9. They must be accompanied by an adult.

Youngsters are coming off a Youth Deer Hunt last weekend that ended the season. However, TWRA’s website data base was not updating final harvest numbers at midweek so official results on the statewide harvest were not available.
