Deer Tagging Requirements in Tennessee
by Steve McCadams

  www.stevemccadams.com

With the opening of big game hunting seasons, hunters are reminded that once they harvest any big game animal, they must punch out the date on the Temporary harvest tag and immediately affix the tag to the animal, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).

Once the animal is properly tagged, the hunter may continue to hunt, if additional animals are allowed (however no more than one antlered deer may be taken per day), and at the conclusion of the hunting day all harvested big game must be transported to the nearest checking station where
a permanent harvest tag will be completed for each animal.  At that time the hunter's temporary harvest tag will be replaced.

The permanent harvest tag is a legal document and must be signed by the hunter.  By signing the permanent harvest tag, the hunter is affirming that the information, as it appears on the tag, is correct and valid.  The permanent tag must remain with the animal until final processing.

Landowners, resident senior citizens, and others legally
hunting without a license do not need to tag the animal before transporting, but they must take animals to a checking station and receive a permanent tag.

Landowners hunting without a license must present their Farmland Owner License Exemption Statement when checking big game.

Information about Tennessee's big game hunting seasons may be found in the 2001-02 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide, available wherever licenses are sold.
