Boat Registration Made Easier

by Steve McCadams

Boat registration renewals may now be done over the counter with the new Remote Easy Access License (REAL) system located at all license agents and TWRA Regional Offices, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).

Only boat renewals may be done at license agents. Original and transfer registrations must still be done by either the boat dealer where the boat is purchased or the county clerk.

Tennessee law requires that all mechanically powered vessels and all sailboats which are principally used in Tennessee must be registered. Mechanical propulsion includes electric trolling motors and gas or diesel powered motors. Boats which require registration must be properly registered before using them on any public waters of Tennessee.

If a boat is transferred to another person, the previous owner should send written notice of the transfer, along with the registration card, to the TWRA, Boat Registration, P.O. Box 41729, Nashville, TN 37204-1729, within 15 days of the transfer.
