CRAPPIE/BASS LIMITS REMAIN UNCHANGED FOR KENTUCKY LAKE

October 31st, 2008

Anglers fishing the Tennessee portion of Kentucky Lake will not see any changes next year on the creel limit for crappie or the length limit on smallmouth bass.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission chose to leave things “as is”.

“At the meeting we asked biologists if there was any biological reason to change the minimum length on smallmouth from 15 to 18 inches and there was none. So, we thought it was in the best interest of bass anglers here to leave it as is,” said TWRA Commissioner Thomas “Bub” Edwards of Paris.

“I think that is a good thing because I don't really feel  the smallmouth population is in trouble on Kentucky Lake,” said Paris bass angler Mike Ward, when asked to weigh in on the TWRA Commission’s decision. “There will be a lot of tournament anglers that will be relieved to know they can still keep a 15-inch smallmouth because sometimes that makes a big difference in a tournament”.

“While we had some big numbers on a petition to support lowering the creel limit on crappie to twenty (20), there was also a petition after the meeting in Paris to keep it at thirty (30). And, fisheries biologists again said there was no biological reason to change at this time, despite their data showing three weak year classes on crappie and increased fishing pressure. So the TWRC voted to keep the crappie limit as is,” said Edwards in regards to the crappie scenario that had a lot of anglers up in arms and somewhat polarized as to the status of the fishery.

The following are the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s changes for region one:

  • Amended the proclamation to keep the smallmouth bass minimum length of 15 inches on Kentucky Lake.
  • Establish the crappie creel limit for waters in West Tennessee (Kentucky and Barkley Lakes and west to but excluding the Mississippi River) of 30 per day.
