COLD FRONT BRINGS SHORT HIATUS TO WINTER FISHING SCENE
Lake levels have been rising several inches each day on
Kentucky Lake since the heavy rains arrived on Tuesday. The warm weather
got pushed away by a drastic cold front but not before dumping a lot of
water in the area.
Crappie and bass anglers have been at the mercy of the elements this
week as both colder temps and gale winds have curtailed fishing activity
for most. A few sauger fishermen are braving the weather, however, with
some improvement.
Presently, lake levels continue to rise slowly and TVA projects the
elevation at New Johnsonville to climb to the 357.1 mark by this
weekend, which is up several inches from last week at this time.
Kentucky Dam is projected to have a reading of 355.6 this weekend, which
shows a considerable amount of water flowing that direction as TVA is
now spilling water through the dam and creating a lot of current in the
main Tennessee River channel.
Sauger fishermen thrive on current this time of year and that should
work in their favor in the week ahead, not to mention colder surface
temps.
Reports this week were sparse as to success stories from sauger
fishermen but a few were landing keepers down around New Johnsonville
and the mouth of Duck River. Not many boats were reporting keepers in
the Paris Landing and Danville Bridge sector just yet but that could
change this week.
The cold weather has pulled surface temps out of the 50’s this week as
readings are now in the 46 to 48 degree range and getting cooler. Water
color had some stain in many areas after the recent rains but overall
the reservoir remains relatively clear.
While crappie action subsided for a few days due to the wind and cold
fronts watch for the deep water bite to resume later this weekend and
early next week barring any additional cold fronts and high winds.
Those deeper ledges in depths of 18 to 24 feet will likely improve as
the colder surface temps are likely to pull baitfish back toward deeper
venues.
Bass action backed off considerably this week due to the cold change as
well. All it takes is a few warm days for things to rebound for bass and
crappie anglers this time of year.
