Although the weather hasn’t been too kind to duck hunters those calm days have suited winter fishermen just fine in the Kentucky Lake area.

Several boats have been stalking the deep areas for crappie and others are working the main river channel at various locations in search of sauger.

Lake levels have been above normal the last week to ten days but TVA has been pulling a lot of water this week and lake levels have been falling several inches each day.

Presently, TVA is predicting lake levels to be in the 357 range going into the weekend but lake stages were already lower than that at midweek.

Rain was expected at midweek as well so that could have a bearing by this weekend but the falling lake stages have produced plenty of current in the main river, a situation that usually stimulates the sauger bite.

Only a few fish have been reported, however, by anglers working the Paris Landing bridge area and upstream around Danville railroad bridge. A few more fish were taken south around the mouth of Duck River.

Crappie perked up this week with some decent stringers reported at the mouth of Big Sandy and up around the power lines at Mansard Island and into West Sandy’s Britton Ford sector.

Some success came from fishermen working deeper stake beds in the 11 to 15 foot range, especially when lake levels were higher. With the falling lake levels fish appeared to pull back a bit deeper.

Water color had some stain to it this week but sported a good color for fishing. Surface temps were in the 45 to 47 degree range in most areas.
