LACK OF DOVE FIELDS INFLUENCE OPENER
A lack of
public hunting opportunities seems to have greatly diminished the
traditional opening day of dove season in this area. Seems a lot of
hunters just didn’t have a place to go when season opened at noon Tuesday.
Reports from across the west Tennessee area have been ho-hum at best with
less fanfare than usual as to the enthusiasm level for the popular wing
shooting season.
Some farmers and landowners were holding fields until Saturday before
allowing hunting, a scenario that allowed more participation for sportsmen
juggling both work and school obligations that interfered with the weekday
season opener.
Dove numbers seemed scattered across the region and a lot of sunflower
fields fell victim to the appetites of deer earlier this summer. Others
had millet and wheat fields but reported low numbers of doves despite
ample food.
The recent cool spell may have played a role in moving doves out of the
area. Corn is late this year too as to local harvest so a few more fields
may appeal to doves in the next week or two once the harvest begins.
A lot of sportsmen hoping to find public hunting opportunities on some of
TWRA’s wildlife management areas or leased acreage from farmers or
landowners were disappointed as the agency’s website didn’t offer much of
a menu to choose from in this area.
The fact that hunting license sales are not increasing should come as no
surprise to TWRA’s upper management. When folks have nowhere to hunt why
should they purchase a license?
