Crappie USA Returns to Kentucky Lake
Crappie USA’s event last Saturday saw 99 boats entered in competition on a
cool and windy day. Despite the brisk March day anglers caught fish over a
vast area of Kentucky Lake.
Taking first place was the team of Jamie Moore of Crockett Mills and
Daniel Haley of Friendship with a total weight of 12.59 pounds and earning
$2,000.00. They were vertical jigging in 7 feet of water in Bass Bay using
chartreuse jigs and catching over 70 fish throughout the day.
Second place went to the three-person team of Steve Ferguson of Puryear,
along with Joey and Levi Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky with a weight of 11.95
pounds and earning $1,000.00.
They were fishing Blood River using Southern Pro tubes in the red and
chartreuse and orange and chartreuse colors on black Teezur leadheads. “We
fished 12 foot flats in Blood River until 10 a.m. then moved to Big Sandy
and fished a creek channel in 22 feet to finish out the day,” said
Ferguson. “We drifted and slow trolled”.
First place in the amateur division was the Clarksville team of James and
Vickie Harris with a total weight of 12.2 pounds and earning $1,500.00.
They fished Leatherwood Bay using chartreuse jigs in 3 feet of water
catching over 60 fish throughout the day.
Taking big fish of the event was the team of Amy Lawler of Trenton and
Dale Clark of Lavinia with a 2.45 pound crappie which netted them a cool
$700. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of David and Larry
Sisson of Wingo, Kentucky with a 2.44 pound crappie and earning $300.
