STEVE McCADAMS “CASTING FOR A CURE” KIDS FISHING RODEO

Thanks to great weather and good times, my 10th annual “Casting For A Cure” kids fishing rodeo held last Saturday at Carroll Lake was another successful event.

Some 220 kids age 15 and under showed up to test the water as we raised funds for the American Cancer Society while hopefully planting a see to foster more fishing for these young anglers.

It was a cool morning and low humidity as sunny skies prevailed. We’ve been fortunate to have nice weather since the conception of the event so I think the big fisherman in the sky has watched over us.

Several area youngsters landed some nice fish including Brady Heath of Paris who won the big fish award in the 9-12 year age bracket. Heath landed some hefty catfish while Henry County angler Austin McKae won most fish category for the 9-12 year age bracket. Both carried home a bicycle and plaque.

Henry County’s Jimmy Camper won most fish for the 13-15 year age bracket. Camper has attended the event for several years and won some nice prizes every time he fished as he is an accomplished angler.

Other winners were Big Sandy’s Courtney Rhodes for most fish and Dilyn McMackins of Huntingdon for big fish in the age 5 and under. In the 6-8 year old age bracket it was Bobbie Traywick and Kinley Millsap of McKenzie who tied for most fish so I gladly purchased an additional bicycle so both youngsters were awarded for their catch. Anna Daily of McKenzie landed the biggest fish in the 6-8 age bracket.

Lucas Little of McKenzie had the big fish for the 13-15 age bracket. And, I always award a rod and reel combo to the future fishermen who traveled the longest distance to participate in the rodeo and this year it want to a young lady from Abilene, Texas. This year we had kids representing four states entered.

Thanks to TWRA’s support and also a host of donors who help make sure we awarded each youngster with some sort of prize sending them home with a big smile and a pleasant memory, it was another successful event.

The rodeo will be making a contribution to the American Cancer Society in the near future as a few late donations are still trickling in.

I appreciate all of you who donated to the rodeo this year. Each year the big smiles on little faces remind me why we host the event. And, we also do it in memory of a lot of good people who have been victims of this terrible disease.
