Fishermen and boaters are reminded of the annual closures now in place on the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge. Each year some areas are closed off to provide sanctuary to wintering waterfowl beginning November 1 and reopen on March 15.

Locally, areas on the Big Sandy unit of the refuge closed off will be Bennett’s Creek, Swamp Creek, and areas west of Sulphur Well Island referred to by area anglers as Walker’s Pocket or the Meadows.

Ducks Unlimited members and waterfowl hunters throughout the U.S. are utilizing  DU’s Migration Map   in unprecedented numbers. Surpassing more than 1.5 million page views within the site’s first two months is allowing waterfowl hunters to utilize the migration map to improve their success in the field.

“We have continually built interactive applications for the site and the Migration Map,” Jones says. “With the video contest, member photo application and the constantly updated content, it’s not surprising that we have been able to reach 1.5 million page views in the first two months.”

Tennessee’s quail and rabbit seasons open Saturday and when the tailgate drops this weekend it’s time for the real thing. Up to now it’s just been practice.

Although it may be a bit warmer than most small game hunters would like, cooler weather will no doubt enter the picture soon and make it easier on the hounds.

It appears another tough year lies ahead for quail hunters as the resource continues to decline. Bottom line is the birds just aren’t there. The saga continues as the bobwhites fade away into fond memories for most.

A few coveys have been sighted but the overall picture remains bleak.

Meanwhile, rabbit hunters have more reason to be optimistic than quail hunters as it appears rabbits are up some in many areas. The additional vegetation in the aftermath of this year’s rains may work in favor of the cottontails.
